In the modern medical era, the emphasis is on having a completely equipped medical center “Under one roof”.
Ashvini Hospital is one such center with complete Gynaec and Obstetric, surgical, medical, pediatric and Newborn Intensive Care (NICU) facilities.

Both Ashivini Hospitals located at Shivaji Park (Dadar West, Mumbai) and Dadasaheb Phalke Rd. (Dadar East, Mumbai), are very close to the railway station and facilitate easy access by car, bus or train.
These hospitals have been started 20 and 33 years ago respectively by Late Dr. Sharad Shah (M.D.) Gynaecologist and Obstetrician who was Head of Department of Gynaecology at Cooper Hospital, Mumbai. He was famous for his excellent surgical skills, especially in tackling high risk and sometimes seemingly inoperable cases.
Ashvini Hospitals have been bestowed with a goodwill and an ethical name in Dadar area since almost three decades because of the dedication of Dr. Sharad Shah and at present Dr. Vikram Shah who have developed it into one of the pioneering centres for mother and child health care.
Dr. Shah's are a Gynecologist and Pediatrician couple having three Maternity and pediatric hospitals at Shivaji Park, Dadar (E) and Kurla.
Dr. Vikram Shah is honorary consultant at Guru Nanak Hospital, Bandra (East), Raheja Fortis, Mahim, Mumbai and also operates at Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai and Cumballa Hill Hospital, Mumbai.
Both doctors have done their M.B.B.S. and M.D. from Nair and KEM Hospitals, Mumbai.
Dr. Vikram Shah has specialised in laproscopic surgery at the university of Keil, Germany. They both conduct classes for pregnant women, couples planning pregnancy, premarriage counseling classes, baby care and massage classes. Their articles appear in English, Marathi and Gujrathi in various newspapers and magazines on holistic Pregnancy and Garbhasanskar.
They have undergone training in underwater delivery (Hydro birth) at Chicago, U.S.A.
They have been invited for interviews in a number of T.V. and radio Channels.
'Suprejesathi Garbhasanskar' (Marathi) -
They compiled their information and published first book in Marathi titled 'Suprejesathi Garbhasanskar'. This was released in a grand 'Garbhasanskar Pregnancy Workshop' where the sanskar ceremony was performed on 650 pregnant couples and the entire edition sold out during the weekend. Our Marathi book has sold 1.5 lakhs copies in the last few years, but a frequently asked question by the modern mother was whether a book in English was available. The book was translated into Hindi and Gujarati and finally we have decided to bring it out in English. We decided it would be a full four colour version having real photographs of antenatal students doing the sessions rather than using professional models.
Their English Book titled 'Garbhasanskar in Pregnancy' has been recently released (Oct. 2007) and the demand for this book has been tremendous from expectant mothers in India and abroad.
Dr. Vikram Shah's father was late Dr. Sharad Shah (Head of the department of Gynecology) at Cooper Hospital, Vile Parle who was famous in India and abroad for his innovative surgical skills, selfless service and dedication to patients.
Dr. Geetanjali Shah's mother, Dr. Urjita Jain is a Gynecologist and herbalist who is renowned all over the country for her herbal products, articles and lectures on adaption of a natural lifestyle.
The most common anxiety faced by expectant mothers is whether they would have a normal or a cesearean delivery. Regular exercise can increase the muscle tone and help bearing down in labour for a normal delivery. However if cesearean is advised for baby problems like fetal distress the patients have the facility of studying the NST strip (Non Stress Test) and can see for themselves the need for operative intervention.
The provision of having maternity, pediatric and newborn ICU facilities in the same hospital is a boon for all patients. Those babies with premature deliveries, meconium aspiration, jaundice can be kept under the same roof with the mother - a facility which is available in only very few nursing homes. All routine maternity and high risk maternity facilities are available at Ashvini Hospital.
Dr. Vikram Shah also operates at Guru Nanak Hospital, Bandra (East), Mumbai, Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai and Cumballa Hill Hospital, Mumbai. Those patients who have a medical problem in pregnancy like a cardiac, kidney or liver disease can be operated in these institutions by Dr. Shah, which have an ICU facility in case of emergency.
The procedure of aspirating the amniotic fluid around the baby for genetic analysis is done by the team of obstetrician and radiologist.
Waterbirth (Underwater delivery)
The 'Gentle Birth Pool' for delivering the baby underwater has been imported from the Global Maternal and Child Health Care Association (Barbara Harper) from Oregon, U.S.A. Patients can opt for water assisted delivery or underwater delivery. If the patient desires to have a waterbirth, she should inform the Obstetric unit in advance.
Painless delivery (Epidural Anesthesia)
In epidural anesthesia, a small amount of a drug is given to the pregnant woman in labour which blocks the labour pain sensations but allows the labour contractions to continue is given through a catheter inserted in the lower back. This helps to deliver in a virtual pain free atmosphere. The hospital has its team of skilled anesthetists, obstetrician and pediatricians required for the above. The patient can opt for painless delivery prior to or anytime during her labour process.
Amnicoentesis-Under sonography guidance, a needle is inserted through the abdominal wall into the amniotic fluid and this yellow fluid is asplrated as shown in the photograph. It is then sent to the genetic lab for testing.
The Photograph demonstrates our "Waterbirth Facilities". The Gentle Birth Pool(imported from the 'Global Maternal And Child Health Care Association,U.S.A), the water temperature maintenance floating thermometer and underwater doppler in the nurses hand for monitoring baby's heart sounds in underwater delivery..
How does a full term baby come out of a pelvis of this size? The scientific explanation of baby delivery and the associated labour pains through models of a pelvis bone and a dummy doll helps to alleviate anxiety.
Posh ladies can't push! They need to be explained when they 'can' and can't have epidural analgesia. Demonstration of the epidural catheter tube.

The operation is done under Regional Anaesthesia or rarely under general Anaesthesia. It is performed by the transvaginal route or some times by a bikini cut.
Post operative the patient is given oral feed in 12-16 hours and is ambulatory the next day. Discharge is given after 3 days. Hysterectomy today has become a very simple surgery. Though not always necessary blood transfusion provision is made.
Family planning operation – Ligation of the fallopian tubes is done using the Laproscope method or the traditional route.
General Surgeries – Appendix, Hernia, Hydrocele and other operations.
- Infertility diagnosis and treatment
- Tubal Ligation
Infertility is the inability to become pregnant after one year of having regular unprotected intercourse. Sometimes there is inability to carry a pregnancy to term, which is another form of infertility. Infertility is a problem for one out of six couples.
Infertility in 80% cases could be because of either male or female factors. In 10% of the cases it could be a common factor and in the remaining 10% the cause is unknown. Infertility in women could be due to hormonal or physiological reasons.
Psychological reasons, hormonal imbalance, excessive temperature exposure, age and some diseases or drugs cause infertility in males. Physical examination and some specific tests help in diagnosing infertility and evaluating response during follow up. With treatment in a majority of cases infertility can be overcome.
Detailed non invasive physical checkup of the husband and wife is done and their reproductive ability is assessed by microscopic and biochemical evaluation.
All facilities for diagnosis and treatment of infertility include blood and semen tests, Hysterosalpingography (HSG), laproscopy, IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) and IVF (Invitro Fertilization [Test tube baby]) are available at Ashvini Hospital. For details, look up section on IVF Centre in the main menu.
